Check out our update to this project now that construction is complete!

Overview:
This portion of the project installs a bridge over Silver Springs and implements the first phase of planting at the restoration site. The bridge replaces a condemned bridge over the main channel South Prairie Creek with a bridge over the much smaller spring channel on the east side of the project.

What we are doing:
This project aims to restore over a half-mile of main channel habitat, create a half-mile of new side channel habitat, increase groundwater recharge and flood storage, and:

  • Replace a condemned crossing over South Prairie Creek with a bridge over Silver Springs Creek.
  • Install 4 channel spanning wood and rock structures along a 0.5-mile reach of South Prairie Creek.
  • Place 6 mid-channel wood structures.
  • Create over 0.5 miles of new side channel habitat.
  • Restore connectivity to 80 acres of floodplain.
  • Demolish 9 remnant barn and dairy structures.
  • Restore 63 acres of valley bottom forest.

Project Partners:

  • Pierce Conservation District
  • Pierce County Surface Water Management
  • Puyallup Tribe of Indians

Why is this issue important:
South Prairie Creek is identified as a priority stream for restoration given its low quantities of large wood and disconnection from the floodplain. This project will increase salmonid reproductive success and emergence potential.

What you can do:

Central to this effort is the experiential and outdoor learning component. Involving students in hands-on learning in the outdoors is a focus is of the District’s environmental education program and the South Prairie Creek Preserve is an ideal location for this to occur. Look for upcoming volunteer events at South Prairie Creek Preserve, donate to your local Conservation District or Salmon Enhancement Group and once completed, visit the Educational Center.

About our organization:
The South Puget Sound Prairie Enhancement Group is a local voice for regional salmon recovery. From the highest peak in the Cascades, to the fertile shorelines and estuaries of Puget Sound, we restore salmon habitat with willing landowners.

More information

Did you know: The Habitat Strategic Initiative is working to refine and implement the Floodplains Implementation Strategy which aims to support integrated floodplain management and increase the connection of rivers in Puget Sound’s largest river deltas. A few of us visited the site and helped record some baseline monitoring information like stream type, width, and large woody debris. We are excited to be part of the South Sound Enhancement Group’s success.
