Funding Opportunity Now Open: Innovative Best Management Practice Installations for Toxic Chemicals in Hotspots and Transportation Areas

The Puget Sound Stormwater Strategic Initiative Lead (SIL) has opened a new Requests for Proposals (RFPs) to support the development of innovative best management practices (BMP) installations in toxic hotspots and transportation areas. This funding opportunity is intended for the removal of toxic contaminants including 6PPD, 6PPDQ, and/or PCBs. Other toxics may be suggested by proposers as well as proposals that address expanded geographic testing of current BMPs. Open now through May 20, 2024.

The full solicitation and application details for these RFPs are available on the Stormwater SIL’s RFP page. With this funding opportunity, we are excited to invest in innovative BMP installations and effectiveness studies that increase the regional body of knowledge of stormwater treatment practices that effectively reduce priority toxic chemicals.

Innovative Best Management Practice Installations for Toxic Chemicals in Hotspots and Transportation Areas

Available funding: Up to $1,500,000 total investment, up to $500,000 per award.

Given the need for stormwater retrofits in Puget Sound, we are specifically looking for proposals to test BMP effectiveness to remove or reduce priority toxics, that are cost effective, easily deployable, have reasonable operations and maintenance costs. A BMP that reduces multiple toxics would even better.

This investment focuses on innovative techniques and pilot efforts for Best Management Practices (BMP) installations in toxic chemical hotspots and transportation environments. This may include hotspots for priority toxics in stormwater runoff including, but not limited to, 6PPD, 6PPD-Q, and PCBs along federal, state, and local highways and streets, and in industrial environments.

Pilot efforts may range from new technologies that have not yet been tested on the ground, techniques that have been used on a small scale in another location or application, or technologies that are Technology Assessment Protocol (TAPE) approved but have not been evaluated for treatment of 6PPD, 6PPD-Q, or PCBs.

Applications are due by 5pm PST on May 22, 2024, with award announcements planned for late June. If funds remain after the initial awards are made, applications may be accepted during a second solicitation until funds are fully allocated. Full application details and requirements are described in the solicitation, linked here.

This opportunity is funded by the EPA Puget Sound Recovery National Program Office.

The Stormwater SIL team will host an application webinar as well as two online office hours to answer applicant questions and help you prepare the best proposal possible. We encourage first-time and returning applicants to join or to contact the RFP Coordinator with questions.
