Shoreline Armoring Vital Sign updated with data through 2017
The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) serves as the Indicator Lead for the Puget Sound Partnership’s Shoreline Armoring Vital Sign indicator. Progress towards the 2020 Recovery Target is tracked using data on WDFW Hydraulic Project Approvals (HPAs) for marine shoreline armor. Vital Sign tracking has now been updated to include the 2017 HPAs.
Indicator shows recent progress towards the 2020 Recovery Target
WDFW noted three important developments:
First, permitted armor removal length (light purple bars), often representing restoration efforts, has generally increased from 2005 to present. Second in 2014, 2016 and 2017, more armor was permitted for removal than permitted for new construction (white points). Finally, the cumulative net amount of permitted new armor construction (blue line) declined to its lowest point in 2017. This means that the cumulative net (measured from 2011) of new armoring was lower in 2017 at 0.4 miles than in any other year dating back to 2011
